SWO-438 Alcohol, Drugs, and Social Work Practice
This class focuses on exploring the nature, etiology, and treatment of substance use disorders and how they relate to social work practice. Students are introduced to different theories that frame substance use treatment models including harm reduction, neurobiology, and the traditional disease model. Students explore self-help programs such as AA and NA and other modes of treatment, motivational interviewing, outpatient treatment, harm reduction psychotherapy, and psychopharmacology. Policy, prevention, and education issues are also addressed. Prerequisites: SWO-401A, SWO-411A, and SWO-421A.
